LakTis

Innovación y transferencia de conocimiento en sostenibilidad para el sector agroganadero lácteo.

About project

LakTis is a supra-regional knowledge exchange and training project for the agri-food and forestry sector, implemented within the framework of the Strategic Plan of the Common Agricultural Policy (PEPAC) 2023–2027, co-financed 43% by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) and 57% by the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. The initiative is led by the consulting firm Medrar Innovation Office , together with CAPSA Food (dairy industry), Central Lechera Asturiana (agri-food cooperative), Cooperativas Lácteas Unidas CLUN (dairy cooperative), and AGACA (association of cooperatives), all based in Asturias and Galicia, Spanish regions where the dairy sector has major economic, social, and environmental significance. Currently, there is no carbon footprint measurement system that accurately represents the real impact of dairy production, with the sector facing discrepancies between different methodologies of up to 20% in the results obtained, a critical issue that would be unacceptable in other sectors, such as industry. Many impact measurement systems penalize the sector because they rely on inventories and databases not obtained directly from field reality, and in some cases are superficial adaptations of tools from other countries with contexts totally different from the Cantabrian coast, or even crude copies of industrial models that conclude that a cow pollutes more than a car. The main goal of the project is to help reduce the carbon footprint of participant livestock farms by using innovative emission measurement tools and applying circular bioeconomy strategies, promoting practices such as carbon farming and anaerobic digestion. Specific objectives include analyzing and comparing emission calculation methodologies, creating a best practices guide, defining a sectorial roadmap, and fostering multi-actor collaboration. The results of the work carried out with the pilot farms involved in the project will be shared through technical workshops, training sessions, and dissemination events to be held between May 2025 and June 2026 following a schedule that includes a kickoff meeting, validation sessions, and a final event to present conclusions.
