New practices in rainfed olive groves: strategies for mitigation and adaptation to climate change
New practices in rainfed olive groves: strategies for mitigation and adaptation to climate change
About project
Agriculture is one of the economic sectors most affected by climate change and olive cultivation will be one of the hardest hit in portugal as a significant proportion of olive groves are rainfed. Serious disturbances in tree physiology, reduced producitvity, an increased severity of pests and diseases and a decrease in the quality of the production are some of the expected negative effects, with problematic repercussions in the areas of production sustainability, abandonment of economic activity, desertification and the worsening of various environmental problems. In light of the above, it is crucial for rainfed olive-growing to implement new agronomic practices in the areas of soil and tree management in order to adapt rainfed olive groves to more adverse conditions and mitigate climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing carbon sequestration.
