The final report of the Curaíocht an Phobail EIP Project provides a detailed account of this 12-month initiative, which sought to foster a robust, resilient, and economically viable agricultural industry in northwest Donegal. The Cloich Cheann Fhaola region faces significant challenges, including high out-migration, unemployment, an ageing population, and annual earnings far below the state average. With agriculture dominated by cattle and sheep farming—87% of farms focused on grazing and less than 1% of land under cultivation—economic viability remains a critical issue. Only 18% of cattle farms and 23% of sheep farms in the area are profitable, and 63% of Donegal farms earn less than €8,000 annually. This project trained 36 farmers in sustainable agriculture, emphasising ecological practices and the use of light machinery. It aimed to rejuvenate mixed-farm enterprises, bolster local businesses, and advance circular farming practices with a low carbon footprint. A key component of the initiative was the Preab San Úir youth program, designed to reconnect local youth with their cultural heritage and highlight sustainable agriculture as a viable career path. By aligning with the EU Green Deal, Circular Bioeconomy Strategies, and Ireland’s Climate Action Plan, the project underscores its commitment to fostering regional economic and social stability. Its innovative approach offers a blueprint for addressing rural economic challenges while promoting sustainable agricultural practices and cultural preservation.
