Cut-and-Carry Green Manure: Opportunities for Plant-Based Nutrient Management in Potato Systems

or

Detail description

This practice abstract presents field trial results from the Netherlands assessing cut-and-carry green manure (clover silage) as a plant-based alternative to animal manure and chemical fertilizers in potato farming. The system improved soil structure and microbial diversity early in the season, but nutrient timing mismatches led to lower yields and soil health scores by harvest. Adding compost helped but didn’t fully close the gap. The study highlights the potential of green manure systems for circular nutrient management, while emphasizing the need for careful timing, supplemental inputs, and adaptive strategies for success.
