Planting drought-resistant hedges in degraded lands using deep-rooted seedlings

Promoting drought-resistant hedges to combat desertification in arid and post-fire degraded lands

or

Detail description

Drought-resistant hedges using the Deep Root Training Tubes (DRT) system are being developed in Cyprus to combat desertification on degraded or burned agricultural land. The LIFE-AGROASSIS project, led by the Cypriot Agricultural Research Institute and supported by the EU, collaborates with the Forestry Department and KES Research Centre to produce deep-rooted seedlings of 18 native Cypriot species. These include trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants selected for their resilience in arid conditions, water efficiency, and ability to support pollinators. The DRT system uses 60 cm tubes to promote deep root development, enhancing survival in dry environments. The method is designed for low-maintenance planting in post-fire and degraded landscapes.
