Installation of drought-resistant hedges in desertification-prone areas using deep-rooted native plants

Restoring degraded lands in Cyprus through drought-resistant hedges and community-led reforestation efforts

or

Detail description

Hedge planting using drought-resistant, deep-rooted native plants is a key strategy under the EU LIFE-AGROASSIS project in Cyprus. Led by the Forestry Department and KESRC, the Deep Root Training Tubes (DRTT) protocol supports sustainable reforestation in arid and degraded areas. The initiative involves volunteers from 20 organizations, including companies and academic institutions, trained in planting techniques. Of 24 proposed species, 18 are now in seedling production, with species like Pistacia atlantica, Ceratonia siliqua, and Thymus capitatus selected for their resilience and ecological benefits. The project strengthens soil conservation, biodiversity, and climate change adaptation in Cyprus.
