Ficha técnica del proyecto GO ATENEAA: proteína de insecto y frass para agricultura sostenible

Insect-based protein and organic fertiliser for sustainable livestock and crop production in Catalonia

or

Detail description

The project by IBERNSECT SL and INNOVACC CLUSTER CATALA DE LA CARN promotes sustainable agriculture through black soldier fly (Tenebrio molitor) larvae as a protein source for animal feed and organic fertiliser. It addresses deforestation linked to soybean imports—5 million tons in Spain in 2021, mainly from Brazil, Argentina, and the U.S.—by replacing soy with insect-based protein. The larvae show high growth rates, short life cycles, and efficient feed conversion. Frass from larvae is tested as an organic fertiliser for viticulture. Pilot projects in Tarragona, Barcelona, and Lleida provinces, funded with €199,112.52, including EU and regional grants, aim to optimise processing, assess nutritional value for pigs, and validate frass in organic farming. The initiative, active since July 2021, supports circular bioeconomy and Catalonia’s agricultural innovation goals.
