ProFuture project advances sustainable microalgae feed solutions
Sustainable microalgae proteins for European feed and food systems
Detail description
Microalgae offer a sustainable alternative to traditional feed sources like soy and fish meal, reducing deforestation and overfishing. The ProFuture project, funded under Horizon 2020, evaluates microalgae species for use in poultry, pig, fish, and shrimp feed. Nanoclorella and Chlorella show strong potential due to favorable physicochemical properties and successful in vivo trials. Protein substitution in pigs and fish was effective, while poultry trials revealed challenges with meat colour. Shrimp trials are ongoing, with results expected by end 2023. The project supports market uptake of microalgae proteins in European food and feed systems.
