MOVING Project - Sustainable Alpine Sheep Farming Policy Brief

Strengthening sustainable agriculture and rural development through policy alignment and targeted support for alpine and disadvantaged regions

or

Detail description

Sustainable sheep farming in the Austrian Alps requires policy support for organic and pasture-based systems, direct marketing, and conservation of Natura 2000 and Almenland areas. CAP funding should prioritise small family farms and alpine herders, with reforms to ÖPUL to incentivise pasture management. Targeted support for disadvantaged regions, expanded forest funds for climate adaptation, and integration of agriculture into education and consumer awareness are essential. Vocational training, cross-sector collaboration, and knowledge exchange platforms are recommended to strengthen resilience and innovation in mountain value chains. This policy brief draws on the MOVING project, EU and national frameworks, and stakeholder input.
