MOVING Project - Resilience of mountain viticulture in Douro Valley

Strengthening mountain rural resilience through sustainable viticulture and policy innovation in the Douro Valley

Detail description

MOVING was an EU Horizon 2020 project supporting sustainable mountain value chains across 15 countries. This video examines the Douro wine value chain in Portugal’s upper Coa Basin, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Facing climate change impacts like droughts and heatwaves, small-scale vineyards struggle with high costs and depopulation. The region’s Port wine, with DOP status since 1756, relies on local cooperatives, but much of the harvest is commercially bottled. Adaptation strategies include cover crops, protective netting, climate-resilient grape varieties, and water-use efficiency. Sustainable soil management and policy coordination are key to long-term resilience.
