MOVING Project - Conditions for sustaining Corsican chestnut grove and PDO flour production

Traditional Corsican chestnut flour value chain and its resilience in a changing climate

or

Detail description

The 'farina castagnina' value chain in Corsica, a PDO-protected chestnut flour, sustains traditional mountain farming amid bioclimatic challenges. Spanning 35,000 hectares with 50 varieties, it supports 69 castaneiculturists, three millers, and 55 processors. Recognised since 2010, the flour drives economic resilience through direct sales, local markets, and e-commerce. The value chain also supports four other PDO products and diverse forest uses. Ongoing threats include disease, climate change, and land abandonment, prompting efforts to expand orchards, ensure production continuity, and establish governance frameworks involving local stakeholders and institutions.
