Antioxidant and Polyphenol Content in Salicornia Straw for Functional Applications

Salicornia straw rich in bioactive polyphenols and antioxidants for functional food, feed, and pharmaceutical applications

Podroben opis

Salicornia straw residue is a rich source of bioactive polyphenols, including hydroxybenzoic, hydroxycinnamic, and caffeoylquinic acids, and flavonoids, with antioxidant capacity reaching 4.5–4.6 g GAE/kg via sub-critical water or Soxhlet extraction—surpassing blueberry. The study, part of the AQUACOMBINE project, evaluates phenolic extraction from Salicornia ramosissima (glasswort) for applications in functional food, feed, and pharmaceuticals. Analytical methods include DPPH and Folin-Ciocalteu assays, confirming 15 identified antioxidants. Extraction efficiency and compound stability are critical for digestibility and bioavailability. Salt-decontaminated straw enhances antioxidant delivery in formulations.
