PRESAGE: Preparing the Creation of an Observatory for Genetic Anomalies in Small Ruminants

The PRESAGE project outlines the establishment of a genetic anomaly observatory for sheep and goats, developing communication and reporting tools including a mobile app and databases, identifying key disorders and their causal mutations, and proposing decision-support systems. It also considers merging with bovine and porcine observatories to form a unified multi-species platform.

Descriere detaliată

As part of the PRESAGE project, discussions were held with various stakeholders in the sheep and goat sectors to define the conditions for creating an observatory for genetic anomalies in small ruminants, building on existing facilities in other sectors. Communication materials and a genetic anomaly reporting form were developed and published on the PRESAGE website. A mobile reporting application and the associated databases were also created. Several anomalies and their causal mutations were discovered in sheep and studied during the project (cryptorchidism linked to hornless, metabolic syndrome, respiratory disease). A review of methods for addressing anomalies in the selection process was carried out, alongside a series of simulations. This enabled recommendations to be made to breeding organisations, as well as the proposal of decision-support tools to assist these bodies in managing anomalies.
