Salicornia Biomass Replaces Cereals in Whiteleg Shrimp Feeds

Salicornia biomass from AQUACOMBINE supports sustainable aquafeed with improved immune response and antioxidant levels in whiteleg shrimp

Descrição detalhada

Salicornia ramosissima biomass, particularly stems, can effectively replace wheat meal in aquafeeds for juvenile whiteleg shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) without compromising growth or survival. Diets with 5–10% Salicornia inclusion showed no negative effects on performance, while offering enhanced antioxidant status and immune response, including improved resistance to Vibrio parahaemolyticus. Shrimp fed leaf and seed fractions required higher feed intake due to lower digestibility of dry matter, lipids, and energy. The AQUACOMBINE circular approach enables full utilisation of Salicornia biomass to produce sustainable feed, food, bio-compounds, and bioenergy. These findings support the use of non-edible Salicornia fractions to enhance feed sustainability and reduce reliance on cereals in aquaculture.
