Opis

This paper reviews the anatomical and physiological features that enable efficient digestion and nutrient absorption along the human gastrointestinal tract. It details the stomach’s role in regulating particle size and emptying rate for optimal small intestinal digestion, describes the time-and-space coordination of small intestine contractions that maximize mucosal contact, and explains the colon’s dual functions of water and electrolyte absorption and microbial fiber degradation. The review also highlights the extensive epithelial surface area, rapid epithelial cell turnover, rich enteric innervation, and finely tuned enzyme secretions that collectively support lifelong digestive efficiency.
