Cities are integrating new types of cultivated spaces, generating a wide range of urban agriculture projects such as gardened wastelands and rooftop greenhouses. These forms involve varied technical processes and actors, delivering social, educational and economic functions at scales from individual citizens to metropolitan territories. The article analyzes definitions of urban and peri-urban agriculture, highlights multifunctional benefits like food security, ecosystem services and social cohesion, and discusses the strategic perspectives for horticulture, nursery and landscape sectors. It argues that these professionals possess the expertise and innovations necessary to meet the evolving demands of urban farming initiatives.
