New Sources of Resistance to Aphis gossypii in Melon

This study investigates new genetic sources of resistance to the aphid Aphis gossypii in melon by evaluating nine aphid clones on thirteen melon accessions, revealing diverse resistance profiles. Differences were linked to novel Vat alleles or enhanced genetic backgrounds, suggesting new factors to improve durable aphid resistance, especially in south-east France.

Deskrizzjoni dettaljata

Aphis gossypii is the sole aphid pest of melon and has developed resistance to insecticides worldwide. This study assessed resistance in thirteen melon accessions against nine distinct aphid clones rather than the single clone used in cultivar registration. Results revealed variable resistance patterns attributed to different alleles at the Vat locus or to superior genetic backgrounds. Findings identify novel resistance sources that could enhance the durability of genetic control of A. gossypii, particularly for melon varieties grown in south-east France. The research highlights the importance of evaluating multiple aphid biotypes and broadening the genetic base for resistance in breeding programs.
