Practice Abstract: BIGH Brussels Aquaponic Farm

BIGH aims to create aquaponic farms that efficiently use the waste CO2, energy, and rainwater from urban buildings, and also contribute to the food supply of the city of Brussels and the surrounding area, adopting a circular approach.

The winery industry generates by-products (spent grape pomace, pruning waste) that can be valorised into high-end products. This case study is drafting new legislation that allows renting forestland for multiple purposes in order to increase economic efficiency and maintain a balance between all ecosystem services. This Russian case works on regulation mechanisms so that people renting forestland can use it for multiple purposes, and to include ecosystem services in the Forest Code.
