AQUACOMBINE: Halophyte Biorefinery for Circular Bioenergy and Biomaterials

Co-producing biogas, biochar, and high-value compounds from halophytes in saline environments

Täpsem kirjeldus

AQUACOMBINE is a European Union-funded project developing a circular biorefinery for halophytes like Salicornia and Crithmum, enabling co-production of food, feed, bio compounds, and bioenergy. The project focuses on biogas and biochar production from halophyte biomass and residues, with research on batch and continuous biogas reactors to optimise yields and process conditions. It targets saline soils and residual biomass to address food, water, and energy security challenges, particularly in regions affected by soil salinisation. Results show lower-than-expected inhibition from salt, and potential health benefits from halophyte phytochemicals are highlighted. Led by Prof. Hinrich Uellendahl at FUAS, WP9 focuses on scaling up biogas and biochar processes. MSc Aadila Cayenne, a PhD candidate since 2020, contributes to biogas potential assessment and process optimisation. The project promotes zero-waste valorisation and aims for full-scale implementation.
