Use of improved inter-rows on olive groves, as a solution to increase carbon sequestration

Biodiverse inter-row vegetation in olive groves can improve carbon sequestration, soil fertility, water infiltration and biodiversity while supporting climate-resilient farming systems.

Detail description

This practice abstract presents the introduction of biodiverse inter-row vegetation in olive groves as a strategy to improve soil functions and increase carbon sequestration.

A mixture of legumes, grasses, umbellifers and crucifers adapted to local conditions was established between olive tree rows to increase vegetation diversity and cover. The approach aims to improve soil structure, soil fertility, water infiltration and biodiversity while reducing erosion and nutrient losses.

The performance of the improved inter-row is being compared with spontaneous vegetation management. Expected benefits include enhanced carbon storage, better soil conservation, greater biodiversity and improved resilience of olive production systems.
