Business Development Package for Biogas Nutrient Recovery

Supports nutrient recovery and reuse in biogas plants through integrated calculation tools and policy guidance

or

Detail description

The Business Development Package (BDP) supports European biogas plant owners in assessing nutrient recovery and reuse (NRR) from digestate using two core tools: the NUTRICAS web application for simulating mass balances and costs, and the KPI Tool for evaluating business performance. Hosted by VCM and accessible via Wageningen University & Research and Biorefine Cluster Europe, the BDP offers six domains covering technology, legislation, markets, and outreach. It includes product fact sheets for five nutrient recovery products, farmer-specific sheets, and legislative data from EU member states. Developed under H2020 (grant 730400), the BDP is publicly available since 30 November 2021, with a projected 1,000 users in the first year, 60% being biogas plants. The tools are designed for interoperability, with future updates and integration planned. The system aims to drive adoption of secondary fertilisers, support 200 biogas plants in connecting with the fertiliser industry, and link 15 technology providers to the NUTRICAS Tool. Public engagement and policy support are enhanced through dissemination materials, policy briefs, and co-creation sessions. The project, led by Wageningen University & Research, advances circular economy and mineral recovery from organic waste across Europe.
