Manure Flow and Nutrient Assessment in EU Pilot Regions under FERTIMANURE Project

Manure flow assessment and nutrient valorisation across EU pilot regions under Horizon 2020 FERTIMANURE project

or

Detail description

This report provides a comprehensive assessment of manure flows, logistics, and nutrient characterisation across EU regions within the FERTIMANURE project (Horizon 2020 grant No. 862849). It analyses livestock densities, nutrient generation (N, P2O5, K2O), and manure management practices in pilot regions including Barcelona (Spain), Oberpfalz (Germany), Flanders (Belgium), Grand Est and Brittany (France), and Italy. Data sources include LUCAS, NIS, FSS, GAINS, and national statistics. The study evaluates treatment options—composting, anaerobic digestion, separation, and stripping—along with associated costs per ton or m³. Transport costs, regional regulations (e.g. nitrogen caps, NVZ designations), and regional disparities in nutrient surpluses are detailed. Findings highlight poultry as a major nutrient source in Oberpfalz and Brittany, while differences in agricultural structure and policy impact management strategies. The report supports the development of tailored, high-value fertiliser solutions from manure across diverse EU contexts.
