Towards an MAE on ‘Inputs-efficient cropping systems’
Innovations Agronomiques 30 (2013), 219–235
Detail description
56 farmers in western France have been trialling an agri-environmental scheme on their farms since 2008. After three years, around forty farming systems developed on these farms are being assessed using a seven-criteria environmental framework designed specifically to address various environmental and societal challenges, with mandatory targets (a 50 per cent reduction in the use of plant protection products; nitrate concentrations in water complying with drinking water standards; a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions). Of these systems, around ten demonstrate a satisfactory performance profile across all seven indicators. Analysis of these systems and of the entire sample highlights factors that contribute to achieving the desired outcomes: crop diversification; the introduction of legumes; a reduction in inputs (pesticides; fertiliser); optimisation of the functional role of agro-ecological infrastructure; establishment of cover crops, etc.). These factors are summarised in a new set of specifications. Testing of systems complying with these specifications reveals a satisfactory performance profile in light of the criteria defined at the outset for almost all systems. These specifications have been amended and scaled up to the level of the Utilised Agricultural Area. This version is undergoing a dissemination trial to assess its potential for contractual implementation.
