Economic regulation of water quality: effectiveness and acceptability

The difficulties encountered in effectively limiting agricultural pollution are largely linked to its diffuse nature, which makes it particularly difficult to implement policies that are theoretically effective. We examine the issues surrounding agricultural water pollution in order to identify characteristics that may influence the potential effectiveness and acceptability of the proposed regulatory measures. Regulatory approaches that are better suited to the heterogeneity of agricultural practices and their impact on water quality are discussed.
