Sustainable Digitalisation of Agriculture, Forestry, and Rural Areas by 2040

Sustainable digitalisation of agriculture, forestry, and rural areas through EU-funded innovation and multi-actor collaboration

Detail description

Digital transformation in agriculture, forestry, and rural areas is guided by expert recommendations to achieve sustainable development by 2040. Funded by the EU’s Horizon 2020 programme (grant No 818194), the DESIRA project supports the Long-term Vision for Rural Areas through the European Rural Digitalisation Forum—a multi-actor platform fostering research, innovation, and policy integration. Key digital technologies include big data, artificial intelligence, remote sensing, blockchain, cloud services, and AR/VR, with data analytics, AI, and local/remote sensing identified as most influential. These tools enhance climate resilience, infrastructure, digital access, and rural economies. Priorities include equitable access, digital skills development, and context-specific solutions. Digital hubs, Living Labs, and regional agencies are critical for inclusive innovation. The approach aligns with the SDGs, emphasizing participatory governance, stakeholder engagement, and adaptive policies to ensure sustainable, place-based digitalisation.
