Over the past two decades, recurrent droughts in France—especially in 2003, 2004, and 2005—have highlighted agriculture’s growing vulnerability to climate change. These events have redefined droughts from rare events to signs of long-term climatic shifts. With 93% of French farmland rain-fed, water scarcity is a critical challenge. The country faces increasing pressure on water resources, particularly in regions like Sud-Ouest and Sud-Est, where irrigation needs reach 150 mm and 400–500 mm annually. Hydrological droughts, caused by low autumn and winter rainfall, affect irrigation capacity, while edaphic droughts reduce soil moisture during growing seasons. From 1976 to 2005, France experienced 13 drought episodes—double the frequency of earlier periods. Future projections suggest continued reductions in summer rainfall, especially in the Mediterranean region. To ensure agricultural sustainability, water-conserving practices are essential. These include genetic improvements—such as enhancing water use efficiency, developing early-maturing crops, and increasing root depth—and agronomic strategies like adopting winter crops and drought-resistant species like sunflowers and sorghum. Diversifying cropping systems improves resilience to climate and market fluctuations. Technological tools, including the STICS model, show that partial irrigation can increase water return to the environment. Water management must differ by source: aquifers in Beauce require recharge balance, while river abstraction in Poitou-Charentes demands maintained summer flows. Pluvial farming systems, such as maize-wheat rotations, return more water than natural grasslands, influencing water allocation. The 2006 Water Law and 'Grenelle de l'environnement' emphasize collective water management and sustainable withdrawal practices. Effective agricultural water use reduces waste and supports long-term water security. Prioritizing drought-tolerant crops and adaptive farming systems strengthens both farm-level resilience and regional water conservation. Scientific references, including Amigues et al. (2006), Brisson (2008), and Debaeke et al. (2008), provide evidence-based strategies for adapting agriculture to water scarcity.
