REGATRACE: EU Biomethane and Renewable Gas Guarantees of Origin System

Establishing a harmonised European Guarantee of Origin system for biomethane and renewable gases under RED II

or

Detail description

The REGATRACE initiative, funded under EU Horizon 2020 (Grant Agreement no. 857796), establishes a harmonised European Guarantee of Origin (GoO) system for biomethane and renewable gases. It supports national GoO issuing bodies, integrates GoOs across renewable gas, electricity, and hydrogen systems, and promotes sustainable feedstock mobilisation. The project ensures transparency through audited attributes, from basic production data to verified quality and origin details. It defines four-tiered GoO attributes, mandates external audits aligned with ISO 19011:2011, and introduces a Registration Database for residual gas. The initiative follows RED II requirements, particularly Article 19, and develops a framework for cross-border trading. It outlines core principles for the European Extended Certification Scheme (EECS), including uniqueness, immutability, ownership, operational reliability, and governance. The system supports market uptake via clear, traceable, and trustworthy certification for renewable gas.
