Forage turnips for gestating sows in outdoor pastures

Forage turnips improve pig welfare and pasture sustainability in outdoor systems

or

Detail description

Forage turnips provide nutritional supplementation and behavioural enrichment for gestating sows on restricted diets, reducing hunger-related behaviours and excessive rooting. When sown with white clover in doubled spacing (e.g. 25 cm), they can replace up to 40% of standard feed rations, improving yield and suppressing weeds. This practice supports sustainable outdoor pig farming, integrates into crop rotation, and is supported by research from SLU and the OK-Net Ecofeed initiative, with resources available via the Organic Farm Knowledge platform and SLU’s project website.
