Starfish meal as sustainable protein source for monogastric feed

Starfish meal as sustainable protein source in organic animal feed for mussel farming regions

or

Detail description

Starfish are harvested to control populations that prey on farmed mussels, providing a sustainable protein source for monogastric animal feed. With 38–70% protein content, starfish meal can replace traditional protein sources when harvested three months before spawning to maximise protein and minimise ash. Due to high calcium levels, inclusion in piglet diets is limited to around 5%. Though not organically certified, it is permitted in organic feed as it is not of agricultural origin. Commercial production is established in Denmark. Diets can be formulated to balance amino acids and reduce crude protein levels, enhancing sustainability. Information is available through the International University of Aarhus.
