Feeding silage to pigs using automatic straw distributor

Improves pig welfare and pen hygiene through automated, frequent distribution of silage and straw in group housing

or

Detail description

The OK-Net EcoFeed trial assessed an automatic straw distributor for feeding silage and straw to group-housed pigs in a deep litter system. The system delivered feed four to five times daily, promoting natural foraging and exploratory behaviours, reducing pen contamination and silage waste. Daily rations averaged 1.3 kg per pig (0.25 kg dry matter), with consistent moisture levels critical for effective distribution. Simultaneous access reduced dominance-related feeding issues and increased activity. Implementation required significant technical adaptation and investment. The trial was conducted in Sweden with support from SLU and Swedish Hushållningssällskapet.
