improve organic cereal seed availability in Hungary

National working group to enhance organic cereal seed availability and variety performance in Hungary

or

Detail description

Organic seed production in Hungary faces challenges with limited domestic availability and scarce propagation material for non-cereal crops. The LIVESEED project establishes a national working group including seed producers, retailers, certification bodies, researchers, policymakers, and farmers’ associations to address these issues. Key actions include transforming the national organic seed database into a user-friendly tool with variety recommendations, ensuring seed producers and retailers retain domestic seed lots, and expanding post-registration performance trials. One state nursery was converted to organic in 2020, with additional sites established through collaboration with organic farmers near other nurseries, using existing machinery. Breeding institutions support trial site coverage. This initiative, funded by the EU’s Horizon 2020 programme, aims to strengthen strategic planning and practical solutions for Hungary’s organic seed sector.
