Planting Hedges and Forest Stands in Mediterranean Agroecosystems

Establishing hedges and forest islands in Mediterranean agroecosystems restores biodiversity and ecosystem services. This guide details techniques for designing plantations using over 70 native species adapted to five Mediterranean environments. It covers site preparation, planting procedures, spatial organisation, and maintenance. The FIRE project’s 'Campos de Vida' initiative promotes landscape renaturalisation compatible with agroforestry and livestock, enhancing field diversity and supporting sustainable land use across the region.
