Cover crop mulches and no-till soybean in organic systems

No-till soybean farming with cover crop mulches for weed control and water efficiency

or

Detail description

This study evaluates no-till soybean cultivation using cover crop mulches in organic farming to reduce weed pressure and water loss, especially in low-rainfall regions like traditional Italian soybean areas. Five sowing methods were tested: roller crimping, flail shredding, and direct sowing into standing or shredded cover crops. Methods A, C, D, and E showed effective weed suppression and moisture retention during the dry 2016 summer, with yields matching tilled fields—except for direct sowing without follow-up. Success depends on sufficient biomass and uniform cover crop establishment. The approach reduces tillage and irrigation needs, supporting sustainable organic soybean production. Developed by AIAB, Italy (2017), the method is available in English and Italian via Organic Eprints.
