Weed regulation by carabids in organic arable farming

Monitoring carabid beetle activity on weed seeds in organic arable systems using standardized seed cards

or

Detail description

Weed seed predation by carabid beetles is monitored in organic arable farming using standardized sandpaper cards with poppy seeds. Ten 5 cm x 5 cm cards, each with 10 seeds, are deployed per field—five per transect—within 1 cm² metal net cages to exclude vertebrate predators. Placed in winter cereals during spring, cards remain exposed for four days to assess invertebrate predation. The method supports repeatable, standardized monitoring of biological weed control, particularly within the OK-Net Arable network. Validated in France, it is accessible in English (USA), released in 2017, and rated 5/5 by users. Data supports research, on-farm monitoring, and ecological pest management in sustainable agriculture.
