Cover crops in organic orchard tree rows: benefits and establishment

Living mulches enhance weed control and soil health in organic orchards

or

Detail description

Living mulches in organic orchards reduce weed pressure and tillage needs, enhancing soil health, biodiversity, and long-term sustainability. This practice supports nitrogen fixation, conserves soil, and can generate additional income through compatible species. Ideal for irrigated and rainfed orchards, recommended species include yarrow, wild strawberries, peppermint, and creeping thyme. Establishment in autumn with initial mowing and maintenance via annual mowing ensures success. The sandwich system or annual species are alternatives for high vole-risk areas. Local ecotypes improve adaptation. Published in 2022 by GRAB within the BIOFRUITNET project, this tool supports temperate fruit production and is available in English, French, and German.
