ESNI Calls for Policy Alignment on Nutrient Recycling
Advocating for harmonized EU policies on ammonium salts from nutrient recycling research and regulatory alignment
or
Detail description
The European Sustainable Nutrient Initiative (ESNI), uniting over 20 EU-funded research projects, drives policy alignment for sustainable nutrient recycling. It promotes the SAFEMANURE framework for classifying ammonium salts from off-gases as safe, recyclable fertilizers, advocating for legal clarity under the Nitrate Directive and Animal Byproduct Regulation. ESNI urges EU institutions and member states to adopt science-based policies, integrating findings from projects like FertiCycle, ReNU2Farm, and Nutri2Cycle to enhance circular agriculture, reduce dependency on synthetic fertilizers, and support soil health and environmental sustainability. Key recommendations target DG ENV, GROW, and SANTÉ for coordinated action ahead of the June 2023 RENURe criteria vote.
