Heat Stress and Sun Exposure Risks for Migrant Farmworkers in Huelva’s Berry Sector

Agricultural heat stress risks and protective strategies for migrant workers in Huelva’s berry sector

or

Detail description

Farmworkers in Huelva’s berry sector face severe health risks from heat stress and sun exposure due to rising temperatures, with greenhouse conditions reaching 35°C or higher. Climate change exacerbates these dangers, increasing the likelihood of heat strokes, dehydration, and related illnesses. Migrant workers are especially vulnerable due to fasting during Ramadan, prolonged exposure, and rising insect populations. The EU-funded Safe Habitats initiative and Greenpeace España data highlight urgent needs for protective measures, including shaded rest areas, water access, cooling infrastructure like fans and shading nets, and adjusted work schedules. These interventions aim to reduce health risks, ensure worker well-being, and maintain productivity in southern Spain’s warming climate.
