Three-Cut Ryegrass at Arctic Circle Yields 1,000L Milk per Hectare

Treskördssystem med timotejarten Grindstad ökar foderkvalitet och mjölkproduktion per hektar

or

Detail description

Grindstad timothy replaced older varieties, enabling a three-cut system that boosts forage quality and milk yield. First cut occurs June 18–22, followed by cuts at five and six-week intervals. The farm achieved 1,000 kg more milk per hectare than projected, reducing need for concentrate feed. Operating on 255 ha in northeast Sweden with 68 Swedish Red cows, the system improves feed quality, economic returns, and climate resilience. Skimming is prioritized, with forecasts made two to three weeks in advance using temperature accumulation. Harvesting occurs when the stem is in motion and weather is suitable, using round bales for efficiency and low labor. The farm was among the first in Västergötaland to adopt this system, now considering long-term sustainability.
