Maintaining the right balance between herd size and available grazing area is essential for sustainable pasture management. Stocking rate—defined as the number of animals (or UGBs) per unit of land area over a specific time period—varies significantly by season, growth conditions, and management system. Key benchmarks include instantaneous rates (e.g., 5–20 UGB/ha/10 days in rotational grazing), spring rates (4–6 UGB/ha), autumn rates (2 UGB/ha with supplementation), and annual averages (0.8–1.4 UGB/ha for cattle, 8 goats/ha for self-sufficiency). These values depend on forage yield, animal type, and climate. Comparisons across regions must account for differences in productivity, such as New Zealand’s high yields (18 t MS/ha/year) versus Argentina’s irrigated systems.
