Legume species and sheep breed management in Sardinia

Innovative pasture management and sheep farming practices in Sardinia's Sulcis-Isili region

or

Detail description

Giancarlo Littarru's farm in Domusnovas, South West Sardinia, implements legume-based forage mixtures like sulla, serradella, and subterranean clover with reduced cereal seeding to improve soil health and reduce tillage. The farm uses precision seeding with a front-mounted seeder and compaction roller for efficient sowing and soil cover. Assaf and Sarda sheep are managed separately for optimal milk production and feeding. These innovations lower forage costs, increase milk yield (260–480 L/head/year), boost farm income, and improve working conditions.
