Grazing Monocultures and Mixtures for Higher Grass Yield
Improving dairy milk production through grass-based systems and optimized grazing practices
or
Detail description
Grazing with grass monocultures and mixtures boosts milk production and reduces costs on a 68.8 ha sandy soil farm in a temperate oceanic climate. Through rotational grazing at 2.95 LU/ha, reseeding, and selection of high-performing grass varieties, grass yield and quality improve, enhancing soil fertility and grazing efficiency. Dairy cows produce 5,500 liters of milk annually over 285–300 grazing days. Supported by Moorepark research and PastureBase Ireland, the system increases grass-based milk output and reduces feed costs.
