Grazing Management for Dairy Cows and Sheep in Mountain Farms
Short sward grazing with dairy cattle and reduced concentrate feeding on a biodynamic farm
or
Detail description
The teaching farm at the Vocational School for Agriculture and Home Economics in Salern spans 14 hectares, combining grazing and mowing on 82.5% of its land. It raises dairy cattle and sheep using rotational and strip-grazing systems, with a focus on biodynamic practices. Since 2016, concentrated feed has been reduced to a maximum of 450 kg per lactation per cow, relying on high-quality dried fodder produced via a heat-ventilation system with a dehumidifier. This shift supports ecological sustainability, reduces costs, and improves animal product quality. The farm serves as a didactic model for sustainable livestock management.
