How to establish leys in dry conditions

Establishing drought-resistant leys in dry conditions using innovative tillage and sowing techniques

or

Detail description

At Borgeby Field Days in Sweden, during a severe drought, farmer Åke Johansson demonstrated a rapid ley establishment method using a custom harrow with a mounted seeder. His technique, completed in one pass, minimizes soil exposure and accelerates sowing after tillage. The approach combines harrowing, fertilizing, rolling, and sowing grass mixtures and lucerne in a single operation. Despite drought-tolerant species like lucerne and tall fescue being used, extreme dryness in 2018 limited their effectiveness. To ensure proper inoculation, un-mixed seeds are now required.
