Biogas and biomethane are central to the EU’s 2030 target of 35 bcm sustainable biomethane, supporting climate goals, energy security, and reducing reliance on Russian gas. The Biomehane Industrial Partnership (BIP), launched in 2022 under RePowerEU, unites 22 Member States across six task forces addressing national strategies, project development, innovative biomass, cost efficiency, research and innovation, and Ukraine-related challenges. The biogas model converts manure, agricultural residues, and organic waste via anaerobic digestion into methane and ammonia, producing digestate—a nutrient-rich, sanitized byproduct. Digestate valorisation enhances soil health, reduces CO2 emissions, and replaces fossil-based fertilizers. The BIP focuses on advancing digestate use in agriculture, promoting circular economy principles, and identifying barriers and benefits for large-scale application. Upcoming reports will examine promising technologies, best practices for direct soil application, case studies for fertiliser production, and economic and environmental impacts.
