NOVAFERT: Sustainable Fertilisers from Waste Streams
Sustainable fertilisers from waste streams: advancing environmental performance and market uptake across Europe
or
Detail description
The NOVAFERT project, funded by the European Union, demonstrates the technical, economic, and environmental feasibility of bio-based fertilisers derived from organic waste streams. Led by a consortium of nine partners across six countries, the 36-month initiative (2024–2027) focuses on developing tailor-made fertiliser pellets for woody crops using cow manure, sawdust, bark, and biochar. The project advances sustainability through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) under the Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) framework, addressing methodological gaps and ensuring alignment with EU standards. It includes stakeholder engagement via seven Regional Working Groups across Ireland, Catalonia, Andalucía, Finland, Poland, Croatia, and Flanders. Case studies are being sought for LCA validation, particularly for bio-based fertilisers (BBF) and existing data. The project supports policy alignment, traceability, and market uptake, promoting sustainable agriculture across Europe.
