Diversify forage systems and adapt herds to climate change

Adapting organic dairy farming to climate change through diversified grassland management and cross-breeding strategies

or

Detail description

In Sarthe, a continental climate dairy farmer combats climate change through grassland renovation and diverse sward management. He annually renovates 10–12 hectares of temporary grasslands and overseeds 10 hectares of permanent grasslands with multi-species mixtures including alfalfa, red clover, perennial ryegrass, tall fescue, and chicory. Plantain and chicory improve cow health and natural pest control. Seeding occurs in early September using hybrid ryegrass (Lolium x boucheanum), supplemented by crimson clover and white clover. The farmer plans tree integration, cross-breeding Montbéliarde, Holstein, and Swedish Red cattle, and introduced Jersey cattle for lighter, more adaptable herds. He collaborates with another farmer since 2021.
