Mob-grazing with large herd at Villeray farm

Dairy farm case study: grass-based milk production in Mayenne, France

or

Detail description

This family-run dairy farm in Mayenne, France, raises 165 Norman cows on 330 hectares, producing 1.1 million liters of milk annually. The farm expanded grazed grassland from 36 to 56 hectares and adopted daily rotational mob-grazing across 33 plots, improving grass utilisation to 7.3 tons/ha on average. With sward height monitoring and strategic water trough placement, 40% of the cows’ diet now comes from grazed grass, reducing soybean cake use by 50 tons. The farm uses corn cob silage to maintain milk yield and participates in the Pays de Loire grass network for data tracking. Improvements include earlier turnout and better pasture quality. Economic outcomes are pending.
