Kurzrasen-Weidebetrieb in Lunteren

Case study of a sustainable organic dairy farm using grass-only grazing and innovative soil management

or

Detail description

Jan Dirk van der Voort runs a 55-hectare organic dairy farm in Lunteren, the Netherlands, with 85 Jersey cows, 35 of which graze on grass for 200 days a year. The farm uses the kurzrasen grazing system—maintaining grass at 3–4 cm—to boost milk fat (5.8%) and protein (4.35%) content. Operating without antibiotics, pesticides, or synthetic fertilizers, it achieves €0.60 profit per litre at €2.03 per litre. The farm supplies branded cheese under the Remeker label, avoids factory connections, and prioritises soil health and old grasslands. With low staff turnover and efficient machinery, it maintains high productivity and sustainability. Part of the Inno4Grass initiative, the farm exemplifies innovation in grassland management, combining traditional methods with ecological self-sufficiency.
