Improving dairy sheep farm efficiency through extensive management transition

Sustainable dairy sheep farming in Sardinia: transitioning to extensive grazing and on-farm processing

or

Detail description

Mr. Pulinas transformed his 85-hectare sheep dairy farm in Sardinia from semi-intensive to extensive grazing, replacing annual crops with permanent pastures using locally adapted clover-grass mixes. This shift reduced input costs and improved forage quality and availability, especially in early autumn and late spring. The farm now produces 80,000 litres of milk annually, processed into fresh ricotta and cheese through a mini-dairy. Direct sales via on-farm shop, local markets, tourist areas, and online platforms boosted income despite increased workload. Rotational grazing, targeted fertilisation, and self-sufficiency in hay and straw support sustainability. Ongoing challenges include competition from low-cost imports and limited marketing skills, with future goals focused on native forage research and improved forage dry matter measurement tools.
