Implementing Grazing Infrastructure to Grow More Grass on a Sheep Farm

Implementing grazing infrastructure to boost grass production on a 27-hectare sheep farm in Co. Louth, Ireland

or

Detail description

Peadar Kearney manages a 27-ha sheep farm in Ardee, Co. Louth, Ireland, with 300 ewes focused on lamb production and replacement breeding. The farm, supported by Joanne Martin, improved grazing infrastructure by subdividing fields into 14 paddocks and installing water pipes and moveable drinkers. Despite challenges with paddock size, the farm uses rotational grazing and monitors grass via PastureBase Ireland, achieving over 12t DM/ha. Future goals include enhancing grass quality to reduce feed costs and boost profitability, with ongoing participation in the BETTER farm sheep programme.
